The aims of the CRB are:  

  • To increase access to information to help provide protection for children and vulnerable people against those who might wish to harm them.

and

  • To allow more informed recruitment decisions to protect customers, staff, volunteers and organisations.  

Our aim is to:

  • help organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to identify candidates who may be unsuitable to work with children or other vulnerable members of society?

Since the inception of the Criminal Records Bureau, many people with serious criminal records have been prevented from working with children and vulnerable adults because potential employers had requested a disclosure with the CRB as part of their recruitment checks.  Recent cases in the press have highlighted the importance of proper recruitment procedures, and the possibly devastating consequences if these procedures are not in place. Employers not only put the children and elderly in their care at risk from possible harm, but also put the credibility and good name of their business at risk, if they do not ensure that they do everything possible to make sure that their staff is fit for their responsibilities.   The CRB process does not seek to prevent anyone with a criminal record from taking employment, and indeed there are strict guidelines regarding the rehabilitation of offenders, but this important and widely used service aims to protect the most vulnerable members of society from harm.  Acorn Direct is an independent Company, registered with the CRB to undertake disclosure checks for any employer whose business is concerned in any way with contact with children, the elderly or other vulnerable adults.  This may be sports coaching, residential or day care, home support, adventure holidays or a variety of other occupations. Certain security and financial services may also be eligible to request disclosure checks on potential employees.
